10 Time NCAA Champion basketball coach John Wooden would tell his players that "failing to prepare is preparing to fail." Wooden wanted his players to understand that what they do off the court and before the game is just as important as what they do in the game.  Wooden was a basketball coach but this quote is also very relevant to you as a tennis player. Preparation before a match can be the key to giving you the edge in your tournament. The top players know in order to be successful they need to put in the time and mental energy to make sure they are ready for each match.  It is vital to have a pre match check list for a junior tennis athlete.

What is a pre match checklist?

A checklist is just a series of reminders of things you should have before your match. They can be related to the following :

- Equipment - Do I have the necessary equipment I'll need for any scenario in the match. From nutrition and hydration right down to the racquet tension on your sticks, you should have this covered.

- Physically - Before each match you should be stretched out and have any slight injuries (blisters, soreness, etc.) taken care of

- Strategy - Know your opponent and know your opponent well. Before your match you should have a good idea what the strengths and weaknesses of your adversary are, and how yours game can take advantage of his/her weaknesses.

- Mentally - The mental side of tennis is so important and you want to make sure your head is right and your focus is on your strategy. Things like meditation, positive visualization and music can help you get in the righ mindset

How do I put a pre match checklist together?

There is a sample checklist here or at the end of this article. However, it is very easy to put one together. People have different ways they like to put their lists together. Some have about 20 items they want to take care of before their match others have just two key takeaways they want to focus on. Whatever your process the important thing is to go through an excersize that will prepare you before your match.

A pre match checklist for junior tennis athletes can make a real difference in results. Juniors often dismiss the preparation that goes into their match and focus just on in game. From our experience at Junior Tennis Clinics success happens even before the racquet is spun and the first serve is hit. Real results happen from having a solid process.
